I know, I'm not really in Mexico yet, so it's kind of lame for me to post something now, but I figured I should write a little something in english while I have the chance. I decided that I'm not going to write anything in english for the first month while I'm in Mexico, just so I can pick up the local lingo quicker. (I'm going to have a friend translate my posts from broken spanish to broken english so everybody can read it). But I do have some news I guess. I realized today that I didn't know how I was going to meet my host family in Queretaro. I mean I have a plane ticket, and I figured out that there's a bus from Mexico City to Queretaro, Mexico, but I guess I never really thought about what happens after I pull up to the bus station with all my luggage and no idea where my family lives.
Needless to say, I decided to try calling my family. Oh I tried to avoid it. I sent out a few emails hoping that they would reply and I could communicate with the handy spanish spell checker on my computer and plenty of time to think about how to conjugate verbs and all that, but my procrastination really put me in a jam. I finally gathered the courage to call mi familia mexicana. I tried using this neat Skype program where you can call from your computer. I just signed up for it so I had a few minutes of free international calling, so I gave it a shot. Lets just say that after about 4 phrases of Spanglian (thats spanish/italian), I had made only negative progress, and then the call got dropped because my free minutes were up. I attempted to scrap together the few shreads of Spanish confidence I had left and try again (I really didn't have much of a choice). After another 4 or 5 phrases, I think that we acheived a level of primitive communication. I think. I'm about 74% certain that my padre mexicano wants me to call him when I arrive at the Mexico City airport and tell him when my bus is going to get to Queretaro.
Anyhow, its 3:25am, and I need to be at the airport at 5:00am, so I better start packing.
